Kuno Wildlife

Striped Hyena

A quiet scavenger of the dry country.

The striped hyena is smaller and shyer than its spotted African cousin. It lives in rocky, scrubby country and spends the day in dens and crevices.

It is mostly a nocturnal scavenger, feeding on carrion and what larger predators leave behind. That makes it a natural part of the Kuno food web, and a real rarity on daytime safaris.

Most sightings are a brief glimpse at dawn or dusk. Signs such as tracks and dens are more common than the animal itself.

Quick Facts

  • Mostly nocturnal and shy

  • Feeds on carrion, small animals and fruit

  • Uses rocky dens, so sightings at dawn or dusk are brief
